Face Fit Testing –
Fit2Fit Accredited Respiratory
Fit Testing
for UK Organisations
Advanced Safety Group Ltd delivers Fit2Fit accredited face fit testing services for organisations across the UK. Employers have a legal duty under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) to ensure tight fitting respiratory protective equipment is suitable, properly fitted and effective for the individual wearer.
We provide on-site face fit testing delivered in real working environments, supporting organisations that need testing completed efficiently without staff travelling off site. Services are aligned with HSE guidance and designed around the equipment, tasks and exposure risks present in each workplace.
Testing is carried out by trained professionals with scientific, technical and industry experience, ensuring advice and delivery are grounded in evidence and real-world application. We offer both recognised HSE approved methods of testing, including qualitative testing using the hood and taste method and quantitative testing using ambient particle counting equipment, selected based on mask type and protection requirements.

Qualitative Face Fit Testing (Hood/Taste Method)
The qualitative hood and taste method is a widely used face fit testing approach for tight fitting disposable and reusable respirators. It is commonly applied across construction, manufacturing, facilities management and general industry where a pass or fail outcome is required to confirm that a mask forms an effective seal against the wearer’s face.
Course Overview
Employers by law are required to fit test every employee who is required to wear a tight-fitting respirator no matter how long they are required to wear one or the frequency. We are Fit2Fit approved and as such you can rest assured our testing procedures are of the highest standard and will enable you to meet your legal duties.
The Qualitative Face Fit Testing method is used to conduct testing on FFP disposable respirators and re-usable cartridge half masks only.
This is a subjective method based on the test subject’s ability to detect/taste a test solution. Typically, a bitter or sweet solution, we usually advise using bitter as standard as people in general tend to taste bitter more easily than the sweet solution…we all like our fizzy drinks and sweets so our taste buds can be somewhat dulled to a sweet stimulant.
This method makes use of a test capture hood. The wearer is asked to perform seven exercises whilst regular measured doses of the test solution are sprayed into the hood.
All staff successfully fitted will be issued with an official Advanced Safety Group Fit Record detailing all the data and mask type. This can be kept by the business to prove that that individual has been tested appropriately in line with COSHH and HSE standards.

Please contact our office to discuss your individual requirements, such as number of staff requiring testing, location etc and we can provide a price for you.

Quantitative Face Fit Testing (Ambient Particle Counting Method)
The ambient particle counting method is a highly accurate face fit testing approach used for tight fitting respirators where a measurable fit factor is required to confirm protection. It is widely used across healthcare, construction, manufacturing and emergency services where respiratory protection is critical and exposure risks are higher.
The quantitative method or ambient particle counting method gives an objective and quantifiable assessment of a facial fit to an individual mask. It provides a numerical result known as a fit factor which is set at various limits depending on the type of mask tested.
This method allows you to test all tight fitting RPE including:
- Disposable respirators/masks
- Re-usable cartridge half masks
- Full face masks (full face masks can only be tested using this method)
- Positive pressure full face masks
This test is conducted using an ambient particle counting machine, typically using a TSI Portacount or AccuFit 9000. These machines use lasers to count the number of particles inside a mask and compare it to the number of particles outside the mask in order to calculate the integrity of the seal.
All staff successfully fitted will be issued with an official Advanced Safety Group Fit Record detailing all the data and mask type. This can be kept by the business to prove that that individual has been tested appropriately in line with COSHH and HSE standards.
